In order to correctly answer your question, I must know what state you are presently living in and for how long, what state were you living in during the marriage, if there any assets, and where the children are living.
In general, joint custody would provide that each of the parents would be responsible for the child’s (children’s) welfare, and would share the responsibility for taking care of the child (children) daily, the exact terms of the arrangement to be decided voluntarily by the parents.
